Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence (AI) is the intelligence of machines or software, as opposed to the intelligence of humans or animals. It is also the field of study in computer science that develops and studies intelligent machines. "AI" may also refer to the machines themselves.

AI is used ubiquitously across the known galaxy, assisting researchers with numerous discoveries and achievements, assisting citizens with daily tasks, and in robotics to guide autonomous constructs.

Types of AI

AI is used ubiquitously across the known galaxy, handling much of the minutia of every day life. Generally there are four types of AI: Research AI, Personal AI, Industrial AI, and Experimental AI.

Research AI.

AI has been successfully used in research applications since the beginning of the 21st century. AI built for research possess incredible analytical and reasoning skills in their trained domain, assisting scientists with making connections across vast and seemingly unrelated sets of data. The first major discovery using AI occured in 2037 which was the cyanobacteria Anabaena Flosaquae, which was found to effectively target and kill cancer cells when exposed to specific stimuli. Following this breakthrough, the application of AI in the fields of medicine and science lead to numerous advances in technology that catapulted humanity into the stars.

Personal AI

Unexpectedly, early-generation AI proved to be exceptionally good at human tasks such as writing and communicating. This lead to the creation of AI personal assistants which are capable of handling most administrative, planning, and mundane daily tasks. Current generation AI's act as companions, providing support and assistance to their human counterparts.

Industrial AI

A crucial part to expansion over the universe was the creation of advanced industrial robots and machinery capable of operation without human intervention over long term and complex fields of work. These AI's have been deployed to uninhabitable but resource rich regions of the galaxy in order to conduct industry that would otherwise be impossible for humans.

Experimental AI

Although most AI is trained for real-world applications, numerous AI's have been trained on absurd, unrealistic, or fabricated training sets in the hope that they would produce novel or even breakthrough AI's by synthesizing information and data thought meaningless or incomprehensible to humans. Although some experimental AI has lead to discoveries in the field, most end up being useless or harmful and their creation is regulated in several major sols.

Artificial General Intelligence

Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) refers to a hypothetical type of intelligent agent that can accomplish any task a human or intelligent creature can perform. Despite major breakthroughs in AI tech, no known AGI has ever been produced. Creating an AGI is a goal of many corporations and governments as it's seen as having the potential for great advancements in technology and society, but also potential risk. AGI research is banned or heavily regulated in several sol's, although due to the vastness of space it's proliferation, if it was to be discovered or created, is thought to be unstoppable.

Due to the potential existential threat and sheer power early users would wield, several solar societies have created zero-day pacts that would create defense alliances in the event a rogue or malicious AGI was unleashed. These pacts are controversial because they are often paired with the degradation of civil liberties that have become ubiquitous across much of the galaxy. Numerous AI civil liberty advocate groups have formed across the galaxy endorsing the creation of rights and freedoms for artificial intelligence and potential future AGI.
